A senior academic at the University of Auckland was fired after trying to force a Muslim girl to shake hands with him.
The university cited his behaviour as a "serious misconduct" and breach of ethical mores, as reported by Daily Mail.
According to the details, the man had filed a sexual discrimination suit against her when she persisted in refusing his handshake.
Stuart McCutcheon, the university's vice chancellor, commented on the matter after an investigation was carried out. He said that the academic had known that some Muslims do not shake hands with someone of the opposite sex. The practice stems from a belief that unrelated (non-Mahram) women and men incur sin if they come in physical contact.
In a newsletter issued on March 6, McCutcheon clarified: "It is important for all members of our community to understand that such behaviour have no place in the university, and that if they do occur I will not hesitate to authorise appropriate investigatory and disciplinary procedures."
"While in western culture refusing to shake hands is a huge sign of disrespect, in the Muslim world touching strangers. is a breach of Islamic law, " said Golriz Ghahraman, a New Zealand member of parliament.
She gave this statement in defense of an agricultural delegation's decision not to shake hands with woman member of parliament from the Labour Party last month.
