The six-year-old dominated the Tokyo race won for the past two years by retired Japanese wonderhorse Vodka, while the favourite Reach the Crown faded badly and finished 14th.

Showa Modern won the mile-long (1.6 km) Grade One race in one minute 31.7 seconds with Super Hornet finishing runner-up and Smile Jack third from a field of 18 in Tokyo.

“The horse had more zip than in the last race and his finishing burst was terrific,” triumphant jockey Hiroki Goto told reporters.

“We didn’t have a good draw and the conditions weren’t ideal but I was aiming to sneak the win anyway. I had confidence in the horse. It was a perfect race.”

The Yasuda Memorial has previously been won by overseas horses such as Godolphin’s Heart Lake in 1995 and the Hong Kong-trained Fairy King Prawn in 2000.

Showa Modern paid out 1,390 yen for a 100 yen wager.
