The event was organised by the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club in cooperation with the Emirates Equestrian Federation and support from the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, Abu Dhabi Investment Company, HSBC and Areej Al Amirat.
This championship comes as part of the competitions of the second session of the women sports in the GCC countries, in which 53 riders participated. It took place over four stages with the United Arab Emirates making a clean sweep of gold medals at the individual, team open race levels.
The first gold medal in the individual level was won by Afra Al Suwaidi, on horseback from Al Reef stables, while the second place, silver medal, was won by Emirati rider Shaikha Mehra bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on horseback from Saih Al Salm stables. The third place, bronze medal, was won by rider Sarah Mohamed Al Jaber, on horseback from stables of Mohammed Obaid.
Adnan Sultan, director of the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club, said the presence of Shaikh Mohammed gave a big boost to women in sports. He also thanked Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the UAE General Women’s Union, and Family Development Foundation, and Chairwoman for the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, for her sponsorship of the championship.
On their part, Emirati riders, who won at the individual, teams and open race levels, expressed their pleasure about the attendance of Shaikh Mohammed, which they said motivated them to win. —
