LONDON — French challenger Makfi sprang a 33-1 surprise on Saturday to win Newmarket’s 2,000 Guineas, the first classic of the British horse racing season, as hot favourite St Nicholas Abbey trailed in sixth.

Racing for only the third time in his career, Makfi took the lead under jockey Christophe Lemaire with 100 metres to go to beat front-running Dick Turpin (16-1) by a length and a quarter.

Third place in the field of 19 went to 12-1 chance Canford Cliffs, trained like the runner-up by Richard Hannon.

Lemaire, riding for trainer Mikel Delzangles, told Channel 4 Racing: “You wouldn’t say before the race he had a top-rate chance because of his lack of experience but today he travelled well all the way and when he got the gap he kicked for home.”

Delzangles, who may now aim Makfi at a big race at Royal Ascot next month, said of the victory: “It’s amazing. We can’t believe it.” The big disappointment for punters was even money favourite St Nicholas Abbey, ridden by Johnny Murtagh for top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien. The colt never got in an effective blow but stayed on to finish sixth. O’Brien blamed the lack of an even pace, saying: “They just hacked to half way, then they sprinted.”

France is now poised for a classic double. The 3-1 favourite for the 1,000 Guineas, the race for three-year-old fillies which takes place over the same course and one mile distance on Sunday, is the French-trained Special Duty.
