Peslier, 40, was fined 650 pounds ($1,067) by stewards for changing his boots after weighing out, contrary to racing rules.

“I came out of the sauna with little time to weigh out and couldn’t see my boots so I picked up the pair next to me. I do not know whose they were,” Peslier explained after weighing out and in 1lb overweight.

“When I had weighed out I then changed into my own boots for the race.”

Peslier, who has tasted big race success around the globe, was beaten by a length on 5-4 favourite Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes.

Goldikova was denied a 14th Group One triumph by Canford Cliffs, who surged past her in the final furlong.
