Smart applications in the field of health have helped people take control of their lives. One of the numerable programmes available in the UAE is the 'Aster Chronic Care@ Home' which provides remote chronic care management by enabling patients to control diabetes and hypertension from home.
The technology functions through smart monitoring devices for blood glucose and blood pressure. Readings captured by the devices are automatically updated to a mobile application on the patient's phone and the health records of the care provider, and are monitored by paramedics through a contact centre. In case of fluctuations in the reading patterns, the patients receive calls from Aster care specialists for better management.
For Biju Francis, a 46-year old who works as a technical operator and has been a diabetic for years, the Aster Chronic Care@Home programme is a life saver. "I had major fluctuations in my sugar level readings and this came into my attention only after I started using this service. This further helped doctor prescribe me the appropriate medications in the right dosage," he said.
Doctors recommended the programme to Biju to help him have better control over his condition. "It provides regular monitoring of sugar levels which was the most important for me as I did not monitor my sugar levels regularly prior to this. Moreover, relationship officers also contact me on a regular basis for updates on the status of my health condition."

Usage of the app has made life easier for him. "This has made things a lot more convenient for me. I know for a fact that I will get a call from my doctor on noticing any major changes in my readings, given the continuous monitoring. This gives me the assurance that there is somebody monitoring my condition constantly, further motivating me to lead a healthy lifestyle," he said.
Similarly, Vivek Mani, a 34-year old sales executive in a private company who also suffers from diabetes and blood pressure, said that linking to the app had helped him control his condition. "I visit Aster Clinic frequently for diabetes and BP checkup so that's where I learnt about the programme."
He said that the programme had helped him control both sugar and pressure levels to a great extent. "I still prefer consulting my doctor, even though the application does give the necessary information about the sugar or pressure levels. This technology in fact, further helps the doctor to decide the correct dose of medicines and advise the necessary diet and exercise."
He said that he had become 'self-disciplined.' "With help of this service, I can control excess weight gain, be physically fit and reduce work-related pressure."
