Speaking to reporters during the celebrations of the Elderly Day and the silver jubilee celebrations of elderly service in the UAE organised yesterday by the Ajman Elderly Welfare Home (AEWH), Mariam Mohammed Khalfan Al Roumi, UAE Minister of Social Affairs, said that the problem of high cost of living in the UAE should be resolved soon to ensure comfortable and affordable life for every one.

She said the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) was planning to establish clubs and centres for providing entertainment and health services for the elderly. They can spend their day at the clubs and then go back to their family and children in the evening, she added.

The MoSA will launch mobile medical service to visit all elderly persons in their houses, she said.

Replying to a question about the insufficient assistance provided by the MoSA for the needy families in the UAE, Al Roumi said that in order to solve this problem, the government first has to resolve the issue of cost of living which is worsening with every passing day.

And with regard to the elderly, we consider them to be a pampered lot benefiting well from the social insurance services provided by the MoSA, she said. Commenting on the long queues to receive the fund assistance at the cashiers desk of the social development offices in all emirates, Al Roumi said that this problem would be resolved by December as the MoSA is currently working on a plan to deposit the assistance in bank accounts so that beneficiaries can withdraw cash at any time from the ATM machines.

Fawzia Al Tarish, Director of the AEWH, said that this celebration would serve as message for those who neglect the elderly who devoted their lives to create the present society.

"The AEWH is making great efforts with help of the MoSA to provide best services for our beloved older parents in our society," she added.gulf
