FNC  to mark International Democracy Day

The Federal National Council (FNC) will take part in the world parliaments’ celebration of International Day for Democracy on Sept. 15.

The UN General Assembly, in resolution A/62/7 (2007) encouraged Governments to strengthen national programmes devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy, and also decided that 15 September of each year should be observed as the International Day of Democracy.

The move reflects the UAE leadership’s vision on the importance of parliament in boosting democracy and political development process. The UAE people have been exercising shura method (consultation) for years as a link between rulers and people.

In his inaugural speech in the first session of 15th legislative chapter before the FNC on Nov. 15, 2011, President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan stressed the significance of parliament and its pivotal role in promoting cooperation with the executive authority to consolidate the nation-building, control and accountability.

The School Parliament Initiative, which was launched in accordance with a memo signed by Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, Speaker of the FNC and Minister of Education Humaid Al Qatami, aims to spread culture of dialogue, freedom of expression and development of national identity awareness.
