The ‘Mohammed bin Rashid Smart Learning Initiative’ will be introduced in four phases over five years. The Ministry of Education will develop new apps and e-books for the students’ iPads, with high-speed Internet to be rolled out in partnership with the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA).

“The basic development of education is an essential part of Vision 2021 and is a national necessity for sustainable development as the road towards a better future for the UAE begins from school,” said Shaikh Mohammed.

“It is the principle of investing in the human factor and its development, as it represents the most valuable wealth the nation owns and constitutes both the objective and the means of development.”

The first phase of the programme will start in September 2012 in 18 schools across the country. Children in grades six to nine will be the first to benefit. “The UAE’s infrastructure is ready to begin the Smart Learning technology and school teachers are already attending workshops and technology involvement courses,” said Education Minister Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qattami.

Larger classrooms complete with smart boards and intelligent software will be introduced during the first phase.

Phase two will feature the development of advanced electronic infrastructure in all schools, including high-speed 4G networks. Students will also be supplied with iPads during this stage. The devices have proved to be effective teaching aids in countries such as Finland and South Korea.

Curriculums will be developed and expanded during phase three. In addition, software such as e-books will be issued to students to help them understand the curriculum and aid the learning process.

The fourth phase plans to create an online platform of multiple services for parents to follow their child’s progress online, including their grades and projects. There will also be the option for parents to share information with teachers and the school board regarding the progress of their child.

Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Qamzi, TRA CEO, said: “The UAE will develop all means to benefit from the technological revolution to support various sectors, especially education, which is considered one of the most important pillars of sustainable development.

“The initiative aims to support a new educational process and seeks to set new standards in the development of the teaching environment to ensure the maximum benefit from the technical development, which will complement the UAE’s leadership in this area.”
