“Protecting the UAE flag and keeping it in a bright, elegant and majestic shape is a collective responsibility and true manifestation of patriotic and loyal feelings,” read an official statement by the municipality. Working to maintain the city’s “civilised appearance” also underlies the campaign.

The municipality praised residents’ desire to display the flag from private and public buildings, stressing that the sentiment will be better served by improving the flags’ appearance. Cloth flags often fade and fray when exposed to natural elements, and are thought to give the city a disheveled look.

Calling for swift action on the matter, the civic body recommended that deficient flags be removed even if they cannot be immediately replaced. In the meanwhile, it pledges to mobilise resources “to restore the elegance, splendour and magnificence befitting the symbol of the nation, and to reinstate it as a banner signifying the comprehensive development seen by the UAE under the leadership of our prudent leaders.”— news@khaleejtimes.com
