The invitational event is open to representatives from the duty free industry, with this year’s event attracting over 60 overseas players, with the remaining coming from the UAE and Gulf region.
Colm McLoughlin, managing director of Dubai Duty Free, is pleased with the popularity of the golf tournament. “I am happy to say that the response to this year’s tournament has been excellent, the event has gone from strength to strength over the years and we are delighted that some of our players are participating every year since 1993,” he said.
Golfers from Great Britain, Germany, France, Ireland, Australia, Singapore, Netherlands and United States of America will vie for top honours. Last year’s winner, James Kfouri from Australia, will be present at this year’s event to defend his title. Kfouri carded an impressive 40 points over the first round at the Montgomerie last year and followed up with 35 points at Dubai Creek on day two.
Sporting events on this level have long been a part of the award-winning operation’s marketing strategy to promote Dubai worldwide, according to McLoughlin. In addition to the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup, the operation will sponsor the Welsh team at this year’s Emirates Dubai Rugby 7’s, taking place on December 2 to 4 at The SEVENS. The sporting theme continues in December with the 2010 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, which runs from December 6 to 11 at Emirates Golf Club.
Also coming up is the Dubai Grand Prix Offshore Powerboat Championships, which will see Dubai Duty Free co-sponsor this final leg of the Offshore Championship along with Emirates from December 9 to 11. For the first time, Dubai Duty Free will be one of the national sponsors of the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships, which will be held at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Sports Complex from December 15 t0 19.
