The victory allowed Bani Yas to reduce the gap with front-runners to two points and stay in hunt for the title.

“It’s truly an unfortunate game,” said Sharjah coach Manuel Kajuda after the match. “Our players lacked the fighting spirit and gave their opponents at least four gifts out of the five goals which have been scored by Bani Yas,” he added.

The Portuguese coach said he reviewed all the goals before addressing the media and felt that his side didn’t need such a harsh punishment.

“It makes me feel astonished to see my players scoring three goals and at the end lose the game,” he clarified.

Andre Senghore opened the scoring for Bani Yas in the 4th minute of the first half with a lovely header and Zeyab Awana doubled the score from a free-kick in the 36th minute. The brilliant striker fired home a long range shot which hit the crossbar en route to the back of the net to make it 2-0. This was also the result at half time.

Towards the 63rd minute, Mohammed Fawzi added the third goal with a beautiful first-time shot from the mouth of the box. The Olympic national team skipper outpaced Sharjah defenders to transfer a long overhead pass with a brilliant shot.

Sharjah battled back and Mohammed Suroor reduced the deficit to 1-3 in the 77th minute, but Fawzi Basheer added the fourth goal less than a minute later. However, Sharjah players refused to give up and Gustavo made it 4-2 in the 85th minute before Nawaf Mubarak reduced the deficit to 3-4 in the 90th minute. But Amer Abdul Rahman scored in the second minute of the injury time to increase the advantage to 5-3 with less than two minutes to go.

Sharjah striker Mohammed Suroor was issued marching orders for a tough tackle against Bani Yas midfielder Amer Abdul Rahman.
