Jazira, missing some of their first-team players, lost 0-1 to the Dubai-based club in the Group B fixture. Suroor Salem scored the match-winner in the 45th minute.
With regulars Khalid Sabeel, Sultan Bargash Al Minhali, Subait Khater, Yasir Matar and Salem Masoud called up for national duty for UAE’s friendlies against Chile and Angola, Jazira coach Braga gave a run out for his bench strength. Al Shabab were without Waleed Abbas.
The game was meandering around the midfield and with a rock solid Shabab defence keeping a check on the Jazira forwards.
Shabab posed the first real threat on 21 minutes as Julio Cesar embarked on a solo from the half-line and fired in a long ranger but Jazira’s reserve goalkeeper Khalid Saif Al Sinani went airborne to punch it out for a corner.
Three minutes later, Jazira came up with an effort but captain Saleh Obaid’s left-footer after a Tony pass was punched away by Shabab goalkeeper and captain Hassan Al Sharif. Obaid was returning after a long lay-off due to injury which kept him out most of last season.
Later in the 39th minute, Argentine attacking midfielder Matias Emilio Delgado’s free-kick was collected by goalkeeper Hassan Al Sharif.
It seemed to be heading for a goalless first half before Shabab’s broke the deadlock. Suroor Salem slotted his left-footer into the far post.
Braga made a change at the start of the second half, bringing in Ahmed Malalla in place of Ahmed Jumaa.
The Jazira coach rung in the changes again, bringing in Mohammed Salem in place of Helal Saeed and Rashid Abdulrahman but Jazira failed to find a way through.
In the 62nd minute, Tony’s free-kick was kept out by goalkeeper Hassan Al Sharif. Later, in the 74th minute, Saleh Obaid’s left-footer went wide of the far post.
