At the meeting, Shaikh Nahyan and the delegation, which is led by Former Portuguese Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, Eduardo Marcal Grilo, discussed the importance of education and science in human and economic development.

The delegation’s UAE visit is aimed at setting up a network to link the universities of both countries, Grilo told WAM, noting that the move implies linking UAE universities with European universities through Portugal. It is also aimed at exploring cooperation with the UAE academic institutes, he further noted.

Shaikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and representatives of UAE universities will visit Portugal in autumn to discuss the details of the higher education cooperation programme, he added.

Eduardo Marcal Grilo is the administrator of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a Lisbon -based charitable foundation involved in developing and supporting projects and initiatives in the fields of education, science, health, and fine arts. He is the member of the board responsible for the science department and for the Gulbenkian Science Institute. Grilo is also Vice Chairman of the Partex Oil and Gas (Holdings) Corporation
