Khalifa University organises the first Graduate Student Symposium in the UAE

ABU DHABI - The first forum for graduate students, specialised in the field of information and communication technology, was held today at Khalifa University. The forum saw participation of a wide range of students from inside and outside the country.

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court and Vice Chairman of Khalifa University Board of Trustees, the event is part of the Seventh Information and Communication Technology Research Forum (ICTRF2013), which is organised by Khalifa University, and was held at its Abu Dhabi campus from May 12th to the 14th.

The forum was attended by Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Chairman of the Forum and Director of Khalifa University, as well as, a number of specialists in the IT sector, communications, academics and students.

The “Graduates ICT Research Symposium” received 39 papers from graduate students attending universities inside and outside the UAE. All papers were reviewed by experts in the field, and a total of 24 papers were accepted to be presented, which represents 61% of the total number of papers submitted from the UAE, Britain, Canada, Australia and Algeria.

PhD students from Khalifa University presented on several specialised topics, such as the early diagnosis of lung cancer using color image analysis, as well as, how to improve the transfer of visual content over wireless networks and how to enhance the security of information and the performance of wireless networks, robotics and image analysis via satellite and cooperative localization in wireless network systems and enclosed buildings, by locating the users’ mobile phones.

“This is the first symposium of its kind in the UAE to allow graduate students to submit papers for presentation to a gathering of the top minds in their field,” says Dr. Arif Al Hammadi, Forum Chair and Khalifa University’s Executive Vice President. “This is an excellent opportunity for them to meet and speak to ICT industry leaders, some of the leading academic minds and peers from around the world.”

ICTRF2013 is co-organised by ETISALAT-BT Innovation Centre (EBTIC) and the Emirates Advanced Network for Research and Education (ANKABUT). ICTRF2013 is sponsored by the TRA (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority) in partnership with Etisalat, Abu Dhabi Education Council, the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT), and Abu Dhabi Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET).
