The programme called ‘Ajyal Salima’, which means healthy kids, will reach out to students and academicians in 29 government schools in Dubai — 13 boys’ and 16 girls’ schools. As part of the two-year programme, the first road show took place at Al Kayem school on Thursday, during which grade 4 and 5 students were educated on healthy eating through a series of workshops.
The road show included several edutainment activities for children so as to teach them about healthy nutrition in a fun and entertaining manner. The aim of the programme is to ensure a healthier future for children through good food habits. At the end of the workshop, students were given educational material including flyers and brochures on healthy eating.
In the next step, academicians will also receive training so that they can later roll out the programme in classrooms.
The health education programme in the UAE is organised in cooperation with the Ministries of Education and Culture, Youth and Community Development in addition to the competent departments in the Ministry of Health to raise the awareness of students and encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyles. Students are also encouraged through their curriculums to understand the importance of physical education and sports.
The health education section in the Ministry of Education plays an important role in providing school health activities and has included 17 topics in the ministry’s annual plan to be implemented by a number of nurses and doctors from the Ministry of Health on a weekly basis.
The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health organise the ‘Clean Student’ campaign about health and cleanliness in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah. The programme targets students of grades 1 to 3 and highlights obesity-controlling activities. It includes health-enhancement programmes and asthma-friendly schools to be applied in selected schools. It also focuses on the tobacco-control programmes in some schools to discuss the dangers of smoking on adolescents, training employees on the ways of dealing with diabetic students and first aid programmes.
School environments are also important to creating an environment free of health risks. The purpose is to disseminate awareness about health requirements to be met by schools, provide training programmes for school employees (at least one course for each education district) and ensure the availability of clean water in at least 90 per cent of the public schools.
The surveillance of school environment is one of the main responsibilities of nurses and doctors and continuous follow up with the Ministries of Education and Public Works and the municipality.
