The exhibition provides a major fillip to the UAE leadership’s efforts to provide better job opportunities to the Emirati youths.

The government’s Emiratisation programme got a significant boost on Wednesday in Sharjah with the launch of the 15th National Career Exhibition. The exhibition provides a major fillip to the UAE leadership’s efforts to provide better job opportunities to the Emirati youths.

On hand to officially open the exhibition was His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

The National Career Exhibition, which will go on until February 22, will give a shot in the arm for the ‘Year of Emiratisation’ initiative aimed at offering best opportunities for young Emiratis seeking to join the UAE labour force this year.

Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa, chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that the National Career Exhibition and other initiatives at the government as well as individual company levels are being launched to employ more Emirati citizens. “The show is the right platform for both private and public sectors to spot the talent they need,” he said.

The unemployment rate among UAE nationals is estimated to be above 10 per cent, prompting the government to consider adopting several measures, including adjusting working hours and days of the private sector to make them more appealing to Emiratis.

This rate can be traced to the rising enrolments in the UAE’s higher education institutions that play a key role in preparing the national youth to enter the workforce. In the UAE’s federal education institutions alone, about 14,570 students were offered places in the 2012-1013 academic year, as against the previous year’s 11,532 or an increase of 26 per cent.

Saif Mohammed Al Midfa, director-general of Expo Centre Sharjah, said that the emphasis the government is placing on higher education and career-oriented training programmes for national youth is helping in equipping them to take up responsible positions in both private and public sectors. “The show will be offering them hundreds of job opportunities in the country’s banking and financial institutions, government departments and private companies.

At the exhibition, more than 20 banks, 13 insurance companies, five money exchange centres, 27 government departments and five other private companies from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Fujairah, Al Ain and Umm Al Quwain are offering promising posts to hundreds of Emirati youth who crowded their booths during the opening day.

Job opportunities are on the rise. A representative of the Department of Human Resource of the Municipality of Planning Department in Ajman said that they are expecting more than 300 candidates. “We did not join last year’s exhibition. But in 2011, we got more than 500 applications to the different posts in Ajman.”

The exhibition provides tremendous opportunities to young Emirati job hunters.

Saeed Mohammed, one of them, said he is glad that at the opening day itself, more than enough job opportunities were open for him. “I am looking for a government post in the IT sector. And, it is really great. I have found sufficient vacancies.”

Zachariah Hassan is also looking for a government job in the engineering section. “I am glad I am here. At least, I only have to go from booth to booth to apply. It is amazing.”

The National Career Exposition is organised by the Expo Centre Sharjah in coordination with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Emirates Institute for the Banking and Financiaql Studies. It is supported by the Sharjah Islamic Bank, National Bank of Abu Dhabi and the Commercial Bank of Dubai.

For the first time in 15 years, this edition is being organised alongside the ninth International Education Show, enabling national graduates to check out higher education opportunities at leading local and international colleges and universities.
