A man has been fined Dh1,100 for assaulting his 11-year-old son. A court in Fujairah also sentenced the father to a suspended jail term of one month.

A suspended jail term is a judicial punishment which is not enforced unless another crime is committed during a specified period. In this case, the jail term has been suspended for three years, Emarat Al Youm reported.

The child’s mother had filed a complaint before the public prosecution, saying that the father assaulted him "continuously". The father, who did not live with the family, did this to get back at her, the mother said.

In one instance, his assault left the child with bruises on the face, neck and shoulder. This claim was corroborated by a medical report. The incident happened when the defendant intervened as the boy had a fight with his sister. The father then slapped the boy multiple times.

The father had denied the charges.
