The duo have been referred by the Dubai Public Prosecution to the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance on charges of forcible robbery.
The 37-year-old Asian cabbie, S. S. S., said he was on duty at 1.30pm when he was driving in Al Nahda 2 Area where he was flagged down by one of the suspects. The driver pulled over and the first man boarded the taxi and sat in the front seat.
The cabbie then said that the suspect asked him to take four more passengers with him to Al Mutaina Street, but the taxi man explained to the man that the by-law of the company he works for does not allow more than four passengers.
As they began arguing, two more men entered the rear of the vehicle further insisting that he take all five passengers. When he continued to refuse, they beat him up.
One of the suspects then clutched the steering wheel, while another distracted the cabbie’s attention and snatched the cash and mobile phone from a drawer in between the two front seats.
The suspects then fled the scene, but dropped the phone without knowing. The phone helped the police detect and apprehend two of the suspects and the cabbie picked the pair out in an identity parade. The duo have been arrested and were identified as M. A. A., 28 and G. S. M., 31.
