Tiff over barmaid ends in fatal assault
A jobless man, high on drugs, was walking his pet monkey when he had a fight with his neighbour, during which he beat the latter up, bit his nose and stuffed sand in his mouth and left him seriously injured and gasping for breath, a court heard on Tuesday. The latter died soon after.
He was charged in the Court of First Instance with assault leading to death to which he pleaded guilty.
According to prosecution records, the 31-year-old Emirati, identified as S.S., had a verbal brawl that day in July with the compatriot victim, identified as M.A., over a barmaid, which soon evolved into a physical fight.
He beat the victim up with his hands and knee and bit his nose. He was high on narcotics at the time of the incident. M.A. succumbed to his severe injuries.
The forensic doctor, who examined the body, deemed the head injury and bleeding as main cause of death. The victim had sustained severe concussion. A police lieutenant said the incident was reported around 10.30pm. It happened on a sandy yard near the victim’s house. The victim had been rushed to hospital and there was blood and bloodstained clothes and bottles of water on the scene.
S.S. was brought from his house and taken to the Rashidiya police station. He handed the officers the victim’s wallet and mobile phone.
He recounted that he was walking his pet monkey when he passed by M.A.’s house. M.A. called on him to talk about a woman who worked in a bar and who was the victim’s friend.
M.A. told him to stay away from that woman and challenged him to a fight in a nearby sandy yard.
S.S. alleged that M.A. attacked him inadvertently with a razor on his back as he was tying the monkey. As he turned his head to face him, M.A. threw sand on his face and put his fingers in his eyes, he alleged.
He began punching M.A. on his face and kicking him with his feet until the latter collapsed. He bit M.A.’s nose and “made him eat sand”, he testified when quizzed by the officers.
He saw M.A. gasping for his breath and brought him water from a nearby house upon his own request.
He left M.A. as he saw his condition getting worse. S.S. went back to his house and told his brother to go to M.A.’s house and inform his brothers about what happened.
S.S.’s urine sample contained traces of Tramadol and several other narcotics.
M.A.’s examination showed that he had also used Tramadol earlier that day.
