The sentences were handed down on Monday, with one of the convicted given an 11-year-sentence, with an extra year added for drug abuse.

The trio, Italian Y. A. H., 20, Arab M. G. A., 25, and Canadian S. K. M., 24, were arrested when the Anti-Narcotics Department was tipped off that they were in possession of the synthetic marijuana narcotic substance “spice”, at a Mirdiff neighbourhood, and were intending to sell it.

After confirming the information, police sent an undercover agent to engage the suspects and attempt to buy the drugs. The undercover police officer agreed, with the trio, on the time and venue for the delivery of the contraband. The undercover agent said he got acquainted with one suspect, who introduced him to the prime suspect, who, in turn, introduced him to the third suspect, who possessed the drugs.

The police officer agreed with the prime suspect that Mirdiff would be the venue of the drug and cash exchange. The prime suspect and the undercover agent hailed a taxi to the place agreed upon, where they were to meet the two other suspects, but instead the prime suspect changed the route and headed towards a Deira neighbourhood. Officers, however, were keeping a wary eye on them, and followed the cab until they reached Deira, where the two other suspects were waiting for them.

The policemen raided the place and caught them red-handed. Police found a canvas bag with the contraband inside. On searching their suspects’ accommodation, police recovered a plastic can in which the drugs were hidden.
