Dubai — A Saudi national was killed in a skydiving accident at Skydive Dubai’s Desert Campus in Margham on Thursday.

According to the Jeddah-based Okaz newspaper, Majid bin Saleh Al Shuabi was killed when his parachute did not open properly and wrapped around his body. Okaz quoted the victim’s brother, Thamer, as saying that Majid was an experienced skydiver who had participated in the sport both in Saudi Arabia and internationally.

Additionally, the newspaper reported that his remains will now be repatriated to Jeddah following an investigation.

A friend of the victim, Walid Harbi, told Khaleej Times that Majid was about 35 years old.

A Skydive Dubai spokeswoman said the police were at the dropzone conducting an investigation and that they had been in touch with the next of kin, but declined to give further details on the incident until the investigation has concluded.

“We are saddened to confirm the passing away of a member of the skydiving community. Our safety investigators and the Dubai Police are currently investigating the incident, and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage. The extended family is being notified and we request that the privacy of the family be respected at this difficult time,” Skydive Dubai Desert Campus said in a Facebook post.

Dubai Police could not be reached for comment.

Globally, skydiving accidents are rare. According to DropZone.com, which tracks skydiving fatalities, there were a total of 36 deaths worldwide in 2014.

The United States Parachute Association estimates the mortality rate for skydiving in 2014 to have been .0075 per 100,000 jumps, or about 1 fatality for every 133,333 jumps.
