Old warehouse gutted in Karama fire

A large three-section warehouse was gutted in an early morning fire in Karama on Monday. The Dubai Civil Defence, which put out the fire, said nobody was injured although some firefighters suffered asphyxiation due to heavy smoke and were treated at the scene of the fire.

Major Yousuf Rashid Khamis, Director of Karama Civil Defence Station, said that the Operation Room of the Dubai Civil Defence received information at 1.30am on Monday that a fire had erupted in a warehouse near the Post Office in Karama area. Fire brigades and fire engines from Karama, Satwa and Rashidiyah rushed to the site and found that the fire had erupted in an old big warehouse which had been divided into three sections. One of the section had home appliances, the second had perfumes and wooden bukhoor, and the third had a mix of various materials.

He said that the firefighters managed to put the fire under control within an hour and then started the cooling operation. Until 3pm the firefighters were continuing the cooling operation. Maj Khamis said that the warehouse was supposed to be demolished a year ago.
