A man has been cleared by a Dubai court of the charge of robbing Dh165,000 in cash and Dh150,000 worth of mobile phones at knifepoint from an electronics trading company.
The public prosecution accused the 22-year-old Pakistani man, who is currently in detention, of barging into the company with his runaway accomplices and posing as officers from the criminal investigation department (CID) to carry out the robbery.
He denied at the Court of First Instance charges of robbery and impersonation of police officers.
The case dates back to November 24, 2015, and was reported to Naif police station.
The Indian complainant, a 42-year-old owner of the electronics trading company, said he was alone at his office located in a flat around7.30pm when about five men barged inside. "Two of them said they were CID officers. Another man suddenly pulled out a knife and placed it on my neck. He threatened to kill me if I screamed for help."
The businessman told the prosecutor the robbers then tied him up, tore his shirt and used it to gag and blindfold him.
"I eventually felt exhausted. I discovered later they managed to steal Dh165,000 in cash from my desk drawer. They also stole Dh150,000 worth of brand new mobile phones in addition to my personal phone worth Dh2,500."
After they fled the place, the victim crawled to the door as he tried to untie his hands. "I screamed for help. An Indian man, who happened to be visiting our office to drop merchandise, helped me," the businessman said during the investigation.
The court ruling remains subject to appeal by the public prosecution.
