Dubai - A 25-year-old Filipino, along with a runaway accomplice, has been cleared of charges of assaulting a taxi driver and stealing his mobile phone and Dh2,360.
The defendant was also acquitted by the Court of First Instance of verbally abusing the driver and showing him his middle finger.
According to prosecution records, the incident allegedly took place on March 28, last year.
The Pakistani taxi driver, 26, said that the defendant, along with another Filipino man, rode with him from Al Hudaiba to Al Jafiliya.
“I dropped them at Al Jafiliya and was paid Dh10. But before the accused, stepped out of the taxi’s passenger seat, he snatched my mobile phone”.
The driver said in his statement that he told the accused to return his phone but the latter showed him his middle finger.
“I stepped out after him. He punched me in the face and his friend pulled Dh2,360 from my shirt’s pocket and punched me several times,” the driver told the prosecutor. The duo then fled the scene.
A police corporal said they arrested the accused from Al Jafiliya area after being tipped-off about his location.
The Public Prosecution has appealed the verdict. -mary@khaleejtimes.com
