A housemaid in Dubai was sentenced to three months in jail on Monday after she was found guilty of stealing Dh82,000 in cash and Dh100,000 worth of jewellery from her Emirati sponsor.
The 36-year-old maid, a Filipina, was also ordered to pay a Dh182,000 fine. She will be deported at the end of her jail term, the Dubai Court of First Instance ruled.
The 63-year-old complainant, a housewife, recounted during the public prosecution investigation how she began watching her two maids after noticing that she was losing some money.
“I kept Dh4,000, which I marked, in my purse in the closet. When I lost it, I confronted the maids in front of my daughter. At first, they denied having to do anything with it. However, after about half an hour, one of them — the defendant — admitted she had taken the money. She brought me Dh8,000 and confessed she had been stealing my money. She said that she stole Dh82,000 in total.”
When the employer checked her closet, she found that her jewellery was missing, too. “I could not find two gold necklaces, four gold bracelets and two other pieces. It is all worth Dh100,000.”
The maid reportedly admitted to her sponsor that she had also stolen the jewellery and shipped it to her home country.
During the police interrogation and the public prosecution investigation, the housemaid allegedly said she would steal between Dh500 and Dh1,000 when her employer would go out.
“She would go to her sponsor’s bedroom and steal on a daily basis when her employer was away. Sometimes it would happen more than once a day. She stole about Dh82,000 in cash and sent amounts to her country,” investigators said. Money transfer receipts were found with the defendant.
She has the right to appeal the ruling within 15 days.
