The head of a notorious Italian mafia group has been arrested while transiting through Dubai International Airport.

Announcing the arrest, Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief Lt-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said the man was listed by Interpol as wanted for involvement in theft and money laundering.

The suspect, identified as A.J., was one of the most dangerous and wanted criminals, Lt-Gen Dhahi Khalfan said, adding that he had never visited Dubai before, but he came on transit recently.

A.J. was arrested based on a red corner notice issued by the Interpol as he was the head of one of the most dangerous Italian mafia groups having influence in countrysides of Italy.

The police received information from the Interpol that he was living Seychelles and would travel to Nice in France via the Dubai International Airport to visit his family living in Monte Carlo.

Lt-Gen Dhahi Khalfan praised the Interpol officers who trailed his movements and laid a trap to arrest him when they learnt that he would visit Dubai for the first time.The Dubai Police received a letter of appreciation from the Interpol.

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said the Interpol had been informed of his arrest.

He was referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution, awaiting the arrival of extradition documents from Italy. The Public Prosecution released him on bail until the completion of the legal procedures.

Major Saeed Al Saadi, Director of the Wanted Section, said the Italian authorities had been contacted for the extradition documents.

His case would be examined by the Dubai Courts, which would check the documents that include the cause for issuing the red corner notice, the crimes committed and previous court judgments as per legal procedures.

He said that the wanted man had travelled to many places but the Dubai Police managed to arrest him as the officers here were keen to chase and catch criminal everywhere.
