Sharjah Civil Defence firefighters from various fire stations rushed to the place and doused the fire which erupted at 4pm. As a precaution, the civil defence asked the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) to disconnect the to the hospital and several parts of the emirate including Sharjah industrial areas and Helwan.
A top official of the Sharjah Civil Defence attributed the fire to the heavy load of the transformer. The fire was put out in a very short time and firefighters were successful in preventing it from spreading to the hospital wards and neighbouring buildings.
An official at the Sewa said the power was disconnected in various areas linked with same plant to prevent any further incidents. It was restored after Sewa's engineers ensured safety and that the fire was controlled.
The work to repair the the transformer at the hospital is still continuing, said sources. afkarali@khaleejtimes.com
