An expat has been jailed and fined for offering a policeman Dh50,000, a Mercedes, a Dh20,000 monthly salary, an expensive watch, and a mobile phone as bribe to let him sneak out from detention.
The Dubai Court of First Instance found the 40-year-old Pakistani man guilty of offering a public officer a bribe and ordered his deportation after serving his two-year jail term and paying a Dh140,000 fine.
The court earlier heard how the accused sought the policeman’s help to contact someone so as to escape. The defendant had been detained for another criminal complaint. The incident happened on June 18 and 19 and the case was registered at the Bur Dubai police station.
Two other Pakistanis have been cleared by the court of the charges of aiding and abetting the crime.
The sergeant said during the public prosecution investigation: “I was surprised when the main accused approached me and offered me whatever I wanted for helping him.”
The officer recounted how the accused then asked him to let him call someone so that he could escape from police custody. The policeman asked the accused to wait till the next day to ‘consider’ his offer. He alerted his superiors, who asked him to make the defendant believe he was in for the offer. He was arrested red-handed the next day.
The court ruling may be appealed by the defendant and the public prosecution.
