The Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi upheld the life sentence of a drug dealer, who was convicted of smuggling drugs into the UAE.
The court upheld an earlier ruling by the appeal court that handed the sentence to the Iranian man after he was found guilty of smuggling drugs with the intention of selling them among the residents.
Official court documents stated that the Iranian was caught after the Anti-Narcotics authorities in Fujairah received information about a boat coming to the UAE, carrying drugs.
When the authorities attempted to stop the defendant's boat as it reached the UAE waters, the man refused to stop. The security officers, however, managed to stop him by force. Large quantities of drugs were found on seizing the boat.
The man had confessed to the police and public prosecutors that he had smuggled the narcotics and psychotropic substances from Iran. Investigations also revealed that he had consumed the drugs.
The public prosecution in Dibba-Fujairah charged him with possession, smuggling and consuming drugs.
The Court of First Instance in Dibba had earlier sentenced the Iranian to ten years in jail and fined him Dh50,000 for possessing and smuggling drugs. He was also sentenced to another two years for consuming drugs.
The prosecutors challenged the ruling to the appeal court demanding a tougher sentence, which was later increased to life in prison.
The man appealed to UAE's top court, which has maintained the appeal court's ruling.
The Iranian will be deported after serving his prison sentence.
