Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Director of the General Department of Traffic, said the police have filed cases and issued tickets to reckless motorists who race on the roads and are a threat to the public.

‘‘Specifically, those who install devices to boost their vehicle’s speed will be penalised and will face the full force of the law. Police is coordinating with the officials concerned to file cases against motorists who kill people due to their dangerous stunts on the road,’’ he said.

A list of car workshops that install speed gadgets has been drawn up and a number of young motorists have been arrested recently, Al Zafin said. ‘‘There are 15 workshops in Dubai and other emirates. Six of them are in Dubai, four in Ajman, two in Sharjah and three in Ras Al Khaimah,’’ he added.

An inspection campaign of workshops is being planned with the Roads and Transport Authority and those breaching the rules of car modifications will be shut down, police said.
