The Department of Economic Development in Umm Al Quwain has seized over 89,180 counterfeit vehicle spare parts, illegally stored at a warehouse in the Umm Al Thaub industrial area.
The department was alerted to the duplicated products and its location in the warehouse, by one of the customers.
Juma Jassim, head of the consumer protection section at the DED, said they formed an inspection team to seize the products. The department then shut down the warehouse and order-ed a hefty fine against its owner as per the rules and regulations, he added. "All duplicated products have been confiscated and destroyed," he said, adding that fatal accidents are blamed on fake vehicle spare parts. "Greedy traders are only interested in making quick money without any regard for people's lives and safety.
"Identifying duplicated items is a difficult task, but an easy job for our well-trained and highly equipped experts. The department has managed to foil lots of bids of the contraband trade into the emirate."
The organised crimes section of the UAQ Police had earlier found large numbers of cartons stuffed with counterfeit cosmetics and perfumes of fake brands, in the two warehouses.
The goods, worth more than Dh1 million, were confiscated in coordination with the DED, he said. Jassim urged customers to report any duplicated products to the department through any of its official channels.
"The department is easily accessible for complaints, suggestions, remarks, feedback, and inquiries either in person on the Sheikh Ahmed Al Mualla Road, by email at (uaqecon@uaqecon.ae), mobile (050-1583999), phone (06-7652200), or fax (06-7653322).
