Dubai - A carpenter, at the General Directorate of Punitive and Reformatory Institutions, has been charged in the Court of First Instance for allegedly collecting bribes for smuggling drugs inside the Central Prison.
The 53-year-old Sudanese, identified as H.A., is believed to have collected Dh6,600 and mobile phones in return for his alleged unlawful favours. A cigarette packet containing 161 tramadol pills was allegedly found in his possession, which he intended to smuggle into the prison. An Emirati inmate, 48, and a Pakistani man, 27, are both accused of offering H.A. bribe and possessing tramadol.
H.A. was arrested around 7.40 am on December 8, last year after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) learnt he was smuggling drugs to the prison.
“We learnt he was smuggling drugs for amounts of money, mobile phones or narcotics,” said a police lieutenant.
H.A. was arrested after he hid a mobile phone and a suspicious biscuit box in the ceiling of a toilet in the prison.
“The forensic team was called to lift fingerprints. And the items were seized,” the lieutenant told the prosecutor.
H.A. reportedly admitted during interrogation that he had smuggled narcotics to an inmate by hiding them in the garbage basket.
The police searched H.A.’s home in Hatta on the same day. A number of mobile phones and a suspicious substance were recovered from him. The third defendant was arrested in Al Qusais.
The court adjourned the hearing to July 12. -mary@khaleejtimes.com
