Bus driver gets one-year-jail for molesting woman passenger
A bus driver was sentenced to one year in prison on Tuesday by the Court of First Instance for molesting a woman passenger.
The 35-year-old Egyptian defendant will be deported after serving his jail term as per the court’s order. The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal.
The defendant fondled the woman, a Filipina, and grabbed her in an indecent way. The complainant, a phone operator, 32, told the prosecutor that the incident happened when the defendant was driving her to Dubai Investment Park.
He was driving a bus of the Road and Transport Authority (RTA).
It was about 9am and she was the last to be dropped. When the bus was stopped at the main gate, the door of the bus got stuck and she told the driver to open it.
He answered that he wanted her to give him a kiss. She turned him down and tried to open the door.
He got near her, fondled and grabbed her in an indecent way. She yelled at him while he insisted he wanted a kiss. She told him she would file a police complaint. She rushed out when the door was opened and called the police.
An Emirati officer in the unit of follow up and investigation on cases at the RTA said during the investigation that the woman filed a complaint in March.
The defendant was driving an RTA bus from Ibn Battouta Mall stop towards DIP on that day.
He knew from the Filipina’s complaint that the defendant asked her for a kiss.
The accused then tried to kiss and fondled her.
The accused was arrested by Jebel Ali police.
