Two brothers appeared in a court in the emirate for running over a man with their car while escaping from a brawl.
As per court records, the case unfolded at the Awafi tourist area on the eve of the Eid Al Adha last year when some people, including the accused, got involved in a fight.
The defence lawyer told the RAK Misdemeanour court that the duo was attacked by pepper spray during a fight between them and another suspect involved in the punch-up.
The brothers were brought to the RAK public prosecution, which charged them with running over the victim on purpose and causing a deep cut to another man during the fight.
The duo denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty to any of the prosecution charges. "My clients came from Sharjah to Awafi area to have a good time, but had a fight with another suspect," the lawyer told the court.
The accused, a young man based in RAK, sprayed pepper on the two brothers' faces and car, he added. "My clients felt that their life was in danger, and decided to run out of the place."
Since their windshield was covered with pepper spray, they couldn't see the man they ran over while trying to escape.
The man, who was just a passerby, sustained several injuries. "My client, who is a new driver, was scared while fleeing from the place and could not avoid running over the victim," the lawyer pointed out. He added tht the prosecution charges on his clients for injuring the other young man was null and void as it contradicted the medical report which showed that the injury was due to a collision with a solid object.
"He was not knifed as said by the prosecution at all," he underlined. "The report proves that a knife attack can only lead to a deep cut and damage in the internal organs, of which there is no evidence."
The lawyer told the court that there was no single evidence against his clients, and sought their immediate exoneration.
