The 41-year-old Sri Lankan guard will be deported after serving his prison term.

The accused stole Dh8,000 from an ATM which were left unlocked at the bank branch in Al Khor area. He stole the money after dismantling the surveillance camera.

The manager of the investigation section at a security firm said he learnt from the operations section of the firm in mid-February that Dh8,000 was missing from the bank’s ATM in Al Khor branch.

The manager went to the branch and learnt from two security staff that the ATM had been out of work due to a technical problem.

They told him that they opened and found Dh40,000 stuck in the machine.

They put the money in an envelope and put it back in the machine, but forgot to lock it.

When one of them came back soon after to lock the machine, he found that Dh8,000 was missing. He informed the operations section and the manager was informed.

The manager asked the defendant, who was on duty as a guard there, to run the surveillance camera. The defendant told him that the camera was out of work that day. He then asked him to bring the CCTV records. The manager noticed that some data in the records had been tampered with.

He called for a CCTV technician and learnt that someone had stopped the camera. The technician reset the camera on recording mode and the police were called in.

The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal.
