The Anti-Narcotic Department said at the start of the month, they had received information that some drug traffickers were distributing drugs and targeting UAE youngsters.

The first suspect was a UAE national who had made friends with young people in different residential areas in Dubai, before either getting them hooked on drugs or recruiting them to help distribute drugs among young children in schools.

Major-General Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics, said the department received information that a 39-year–old unemployed UAE national, who had completed only primary education, was receiving drugs. He said the police sent an anti-drug unit to place the man under surveillance.

Police discovered the man’s relationship with another 32-year-old UAE national shop-worker, as they followed the pair near Al Quoz Industrial Area. The second man had a previous drug smuggling and trafficking record.

Abdul Jalil said the police first saw the suspect when he took drugs from where they were hidden near an electricity pole, but he tried to escape when he realised police were following him. The man entered a narrow road, and when he noticed the police patrols had cordoned off the area, he get out of his car, broke into a run and threw the drugs on the road, he said.

Police chased him down, and managed to arrest him despite his resistance as police handcuffed him. Police seized heroin, which was found in his posession. After getting legal permission from the Dubai Public Prosecution, the police arrested the second suspect from his work place and the police referred both suspects to the legal authorities.

The police have referred the suspects to the Dubai Public Prosecution on charges of drug trafficking and drug possession.
