Openers Graeme Smith and Alviro Petersen had a century partnership to take the Proteas to within 25 runs of India’s 136 all out at SuperSport Park.

Smith was out to offspinner Harbhajan Singh for 62 three balls before lunch, but Petersen was well-placed on 45 not out, with five fours and a six. Hashim Amla saw out Harbhajan’s over before the break to be 0 not out.

South Africa had needed just three balls at the start of the day to end India’s first innings as the top-ranked test team was bowled out for 136 — with Morne Morkel collecting a career-best 5-20.
