Kallis all but saved the series for the Proteas with his 109 not out, rescuing the home team from 98-5 with partnerships of 103 with Mark Boucher and 52 with Dale Steyn.

Kallis again dominated — after making 161 in the first innings — as South Africa’s last four wickets added 211 runs.

Harbhajan Singh (7-120) had taken two wickets in the first four overs of day four to have South Africa on the rack, but Kallis’ 40th test century means top-ranked India will have to make the highest-ever fourth innings score to win at Newlands to claim an elusive first series win in the country.
