Left-handed opener Smith played in the second test which India won by an innings on Thursday but will now return home.

In-form test batsman Hashim Amla, not part of the original ODI squad, has been asked to remain in India while Jacques Kallis will lead the team, the team’s spokesman said on Thursday.

The first ODI will be played in Jaipur on Sunday with the other games to be staged in Gwalior (Feb 24) and Ahmedabad (Feb 27).

India also suffered an injury setback with strike bowler Zaheer Khan ruled out of the series with a muscle injury.

Shanthakumaran Sreesanth will replace him, the Indian board said in a statement.
