Zaheer Khan raises his bat after reaching his fifty, India v Australia, 1st Test, Bangalore, 4th day on October 12

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma dismissed Ricky Ponting (17) after left-arm Zaheer trapped opener Matthew Hayden (13) leg before on a difficult pitch that was increasingly helping spinners.

Australia were 74 for two at tea on the fourth day after taking a handy 70-run first innings lead. First-innings centurion Michael Hussey (12) and opener Simon Katich (21) were at the crease.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was proving difficult to play on the pitch that offered variable bounce and troubled first-innings centurion Ponting.

India were without experienced leg-spinner Anil Kumble for the full session. The skipper, nursing a sore shoulder, only took the field after Ponting's dismissal.

Zaheer Khan recorded his second test fifty as India, resuming at 313 for eight, finished at 360, frustrating Australia until half an hour before lunch.

Zaheer, who took five wickets in the first innings, batting freely for his 57 not out, carrying on from the previous day when he and Harbhajan (54) helped the hosts recover from 232 for seven with a feisty 80-run stand.

Hayden was unlucky for the second time in the match. The left-hander was given lbw but television reply showed the ball was missing leg stump.

Harbhajan, who gave away only 24 runs in 12 overs, had Ponting playing and missing on several occasions.

The Australian fell to lively pacer Sharma, caught at short mid-on playing early.

Katich showed focus as he batted for 148 minutes for his 21.
