Researchers on Wednesday said that a highly infectious variant of Covid-19, that has spread around the world since it was first discovered in Britain late last year, is between 30 per cent and 100 per cent more deadly than previous dominant variants.

In a study that compared death rates among people in Britain infected with the new SARS-CoV-2 variant — known as B.1.1.7 — against those infected with other variants of the Covid-19-causing virus, scientists said the new variant’s mortality rate was “significantly higher”.

Rising cases of coronavirus in Pakistan have caused authorities in the country to announce a raft of new restrictions on Wednesday.

The new measures include closing educational institutions in certain cities, and withdrawing permissions to resume indoor weddings, dine-in services, cinemas and shrines.

Meanwhile, authorities in the UAE have launched a special mobile unit of police dogs trained to detect Covid-19 cases.

The Ministry of Interior announced that the unit will be deployed at major events.
