Four Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights on Monday repatriated 1,000 Pakistanis from the UAE, a senior official said.

Around 500 people were repatriated to Lahore and the same number of expats were sent back to Karachi. These were Pakistanis who had either lost their jobs or whose visas had expired. Two flights to Lahore carried four dead bodies as well.

“Most of the repatriated people were those who had lost jobs or their visas were expired. In addition, people who had medical emergencies were also accommodated in these four flights,” said Ahmed Amjad Ali, consul-general of Pakistan in Dubai.

Keeping in mind strict lockdown rules in place across Dubai, the consul-general urged Pakistanis to have patience as both Pakistan and the UAE governments are trying their best to repatriate the maximum number of people.

Details of further flights will be shared in due course of time. The first repatriation flight took off on Saturday, April 18, repatriating 227 people to Islamabad.

However, the Pakistan government has issued a schedule for PIA flights but due to frequent changes in the programme, people stranded here in the UAE have been advised to keep track of official sources to know the changes in the programme.

Around 40,000 people have registered with the Pakistan consulate in Dubai for repatriation. It includes over 10,000 overseas Pakistanis who were rendered jobless because of the coronavirus outbreak.

As Khaleej Times reported earlier, the ticket price on the PIA flights has been fixed at Dh1,650 for Islamabad and Lahore sector while passengers for Karachi will be paying Dh1,550.
