The Dibba Al Fujairah Municipality (DFM) shut down 26 outlets, including hairdressing salons, beauty centres, shops, and pharmacies, across the city and suburbs in May for flouting precautionary measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
"Some of the erring outlets had unreasonably hiked prices of products, failed to show staff health cards, and did not observe the facemasks, gloves, and social distancing rules," said Hassan Salem Al Yamahi, director-general, DFM.
The civic body carried out 770 inspection raids last month in Dibba and its suburbs, he added. "These included 417 shops, 220 beauty centres, and 133 hairdressing salons."
Up to 27kg of expired foodstuff - unfit for human consumption - were seized during these inspection campaigns, Al Yamahi revealed.
"The inspectors have also confiscated 12kg of expired cosmetics, and 21kg of paan and niswar tobacco."
The violating outlets were slapped with 77 fines, he pointed out. "Some of these salons and beauty centres had not followed the mandatory advance appointment rule, while others ignored the regular disinfection."
More inspection raids are to be carried out and the erring outlets will be penalised without any leniency, Al Yamahi pointed out.
He asked the public to report any such violations to the civic body to stop such illegal practices and take legal action. "The Fujairah Municipality emergency number is available round the clock at 092443399."
Complaints can also be reported to the call centre on toll free number 80036. "You may also report the same via the municipality app 'smartFUJAIRAH'."
