The Dubai Police have arrested an Arab actress (M.H) for organising birthday parties at two restaurants. The celebrity posted videos of the parties on Snapchat where she and her guests can be seen celebrating with scant regard for Covid safety rules around social distancing and mask use.
Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation at the Dubai Police, confirmed the arrest.
He said organising gatherings and celebrations is punishable with a Dh10,000 fine.
The officer reiterated the police's zero-tolerance approach to violations of precautionary measures against the spread of Covid-19.
"These measures have been put in place to protect members of the community and curb the pandemic.
"We call on all tourism companies, local businesses and community members to support efforts to limit the spread of Covid-19, maintain social distancing, and refrain from organising or attending crowded events that could contribute to spreading the virus," Brig Al Jallaf said.
The action came a day after the Emergency and Crisis Prosecution Office (ECPO) at the Federal Public Prosecution confirmed that eight people were detained for organising wedding ceremonies that hosted guests who were not first-degree relatives. The wedding ceremonies in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah saw attendees mingle without masks and maintaining a safe social distance from one another.
