Star Magic presents: the little show that could

The beauty of Star Magic Presents, ABS-CBN's newest drama serial, is that it does away with the traditional formula of casting only big stars to ensure high ratings.

Instead, this 'Little show that could' pairs Star Magic newcomers with their veteran counterparts, giving the former an opportunity to strut their stuff and learn from the latter at the same time.—until now.

One such example is the first episode. Titled Windows to the Heart, it starred real- and reel-life couple Kristine Hermosa and Diether Ocampo as a formerly vision-impaired photographer and her artist boyfriend who are thrown for a loop when they uncover a startling fact about Kristine's eye donor.

As always, their palpable on-screen chemistry amazed viewers, but newcomers Mhyco Aquino and Zia Marquez—who played their younger siblings—were no slouches in the acting department, either. They held their own in scenes with Kristine and Diether, despite the fact that the latter two were older and more experienced. Consequently, the episode became a network hit and scored big in the ratings game.

This month, Star Magic Presents hopes to duplicate that feat with new episodes featuring the “kings” of Star Magic: Diether, John Lloyd Cruz, Piolo Pascual, and Sam Milby. Also in the lineup is former Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition housemate Zanjoe Marudo, who recently joined the Star Magic stable of talents.

The first episode to be aired this month is All About A Girl, featuring Piolo with newcomers AJ Perez and Lauren Young. As Alvin, Piolo plays a would-be Canadian immigrant who—while his immigration papers are being processed—has to live with his cousin Egay (AJ) and Egay's friend Lea (Lauren), a shy teenager who happens to be Egay's secret crush. Alvin takes pity on Lea and helps her to be more self-confident—a move that backfires, as she starts believing that Alvin is putting the moves on her instead.

Piolo says of Star Magic Presents: “As a talent of Star Magic, I was taught not to compete with others but to support them, so I'm all for giving new talent the chance to shine.”

Diether adds, “I approve of what Star Magic Presents is doing for these newcomers. I'm happy to welcome them to the Star Magic family.”
