TREAT YOUR MUM to a special Mothers’ Day. An easy way to make it special is to find recipes that are simple so you can spend time together out of the kitchen. Celebrity Chef Osama has suggestions for City Times readers to make it a day to remember.

One way to turn up the sentiment is to cook a dish that she taught you to make. Another is to try and remember to keep mum in mind. “Mothers are always cooking what their kids like, their husbands like, never thinking ‘what do I like’,” says Osama. So, keep her tastes in mind when creating your menu.

Breaking the routine is a good way to make a mark. Chef says waking up early and making your mum a simple breakfasts is a loving gesture. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner, or even just a sweet dessert treat, remember to keep it quick and easy to ensure you can spend quality time with this special lady.

For those who don’t consider themselves chefs, no-bake cheesecake is one of Chef Osama’s favourite quick recipes, but remember it needs time to set in the fridge. Quiche is also very easy but takes time to cook. “The difference between men and women is that a man gets hungry and wants to eat now, a woman will take patience to eat what she wants,” he jokes.

A picnic is a good way to spend quality time together. Chef suggests avoiding anything that could spoil in the sun, such as mayonnaise. Barbeque lunches are a tasty way to enjoy the day. Fruit skewers grilled with honey make a sweet ending to this lunch.

Keep all components of a dish in separate Ziploc bags, check the ingredients to make sure they haven’t gone off and mix them in a larger bag. Simple dressings of oil and vinegar are a healthy, delicious and safe picnic option.

Remember, “it’s not the food, it’s the mood.”
