With a sultry voice that has evolved far past her initial folksy sound, the Grammy award winner is all set to take on Abu Dhabi this weekend, bringing with her a decade-long career of hits and some surprising new moves.

Fans and critics alike are still amazed at the longevity of Furtado’s successful tenure in the music industry. By most accounts, she was a pretty-faced one-hit wonder destined to blend into the background of an overly saturated pop scene inundated with melodic cutouts of artists whose sex appeal often trumped their talent. And while she has played up her raunchy side in recent years, she’s done so with a level of class and maturity that her counterparts could never seem to attain.

Motherhood has been good to her as well. Furtado has a daughter with ex-boyfriend Jasper Gahunia, a DJ, and she married Cuban sound engineer Demacio Castellón in 2008. Her “Latin infatuation” didn’t end there, releasing a critically acclaimed Spanish language album last year called Mi Plan that dominated the Billboard charts.

From folk to pop to hip-hop and R&B, Furtado has seamlessly conquered all genres of the playing field, unabashedly changing her tunes with the times. Her smartest move - launching a record label - freed her from industry execs that might have derailed her devotion to musical evolution.
