WITH the recent licencing of homeopaths in the Emirates, the otherwise low-key practice has got a much-needed shot in the arm. The practitioners of the ancient Indian science are far more visible now than they have ever been before. Even some of the most highly qualified homeopaths who had been lying low due to the lack of infrastructure and permit to practise locally, have now swung into action and are either opening up their own clinic or joining hands with the main stream practice.
The reasons are clear, homeopath is one of the most popular of alternative medicine options available that enjoys very high confidence levels with people from all walks of life and all nationalities.
The seemingly, innocuous little sugarcoated granules have long proved their efficacy. They are safe, non-toxic and have been known to prove effective even in problems where allopathy has not yet found a breakthrough.
"Since it rarely has any side-effects, it is safe for children, for the elderly and can be administered along with allopathy no matter what the problem," says a leading city homeopath, Dr Deena Malpani who has just joined hands with the Prime Medical Centre in Deira and has started consulting patients from here.
"There are many takers for this system and people who used to traditionally visit their homeopaths in their home country and carry back medicine stock for a year, are now much relieved to note they can now buy it locally," she says.
"The practice is indeed looking up and as things fall into place regarding the pharmacies and the intricacies of medicine administering, homeopaths are going to be a busy lot," she says with a smile.
The reason has much to do with the simple premise that lies at the heart of homeopathy. Says Dr Deena, "Homeopathy is a system of medicine that uses natural substances mostly derived from plants and minerals which have been transformed into invaluable medicines for mild as well as chronic problems."
Metals like Gold, Silver, Platinum and minerals like Sulphur, Arsenic and Antimony and flowers, roots, fruits and nuts have also been made to serve the mission of homeopathy. Remedies and treatments are all personalised and prescribed in different potencies (or strengths) depending on each individual case.
The system of Homeopathy, that of 'like curing like', that finds its roots in the Vedas was first brought to light by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, an orthodox German physician, who disillusioned with the prevalent system of over-medication and strong often fatal usage of drugs, set out looking for an alternative.
Like any revolutionary new branch of medicine, the journey was neither easy nor free of hurdles, but formed the base on which the modern day practice is founded.
Though it is a slow treatment and has its limitations, it has proved effective for a variety of problems, says Dr Deena. You name it. From coughs and cold to influenza, allergies, sinusitis, rhinitis, headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea, dysentery, colic, tonsillitis, bronchitis, breathlessness, measles, mumps, dentition problems, otitis-media (pus from ear), gastroenteritis (vomiting-diarrhoea), acidity, gases, urticaria, recurrent urinary tract infection, joints pain, bad effects of injuries-sprains, urticaria, pimples, corns, warts, psoriasis, eczema, etc. can be very successfully using homeopathy.
For parents, homeopathy provides a comfort zone and has consistently proved as a buffer which protects them from several problems. It builds up their resistance over a period of time and with its small and safe dosage system, helps keep strong medication at bay.
"Specially in Dubai, we see young parents who for want of a support system and the joint family network, get unduly worked up about their offspring’s health. Even small problems seem magnified and the use of strong medication or hospitalisation only adds to their woes."
"In such a situation, proper and consistent administering of homeopathy can prove to be a boon and with prolonged use, it can build up a strong immune system that can even protect him from problems later in life," says Dr Deena.
