Holiday Centre’s health programme is under the umbrella of 3B’s ‘Act Now’ campaign, the main theme of the 3rd National Osteoporosis Week which is taking place from November 12 to 17. 3B aims to educate the public on the proper management of osteoporosis through the activity, which will be highlighted by a free osteoporosis screening and lecture to be conducted by Dr Humaira Naseer, Endocrinologist at the Emirates Hospital.
As part of 3B’s campaign, the programme aims to reach out to as many women in the UAE as possible, spreading awareness about the debilitating effects of osteoporosis, the importance of early detection and prevention, the risk factors involved and the treatment options available to suffering patients.
Osteoporosis is caused by an abnormality in the body's bone rebuilding cycle which leads to highly sensitive bones that have a tendency to break. It affects one in three women over the age of 50 and can cause pain, disability, loss of independence and even death. It is a silent thief with devastating effects on a patient’s life. An average of 24 per cent of hip fracture patients aged 50 and over die in the year following their fracture. At six months after a hip fracture, only 15 per cent of hip fracture patients can walk across a room unaided.
